Dental implants
Dental implants are essentially artificial tooth roots that can be used to anchor a crown, a bridge or a full denture.
Implants are small screws inserted into the jawbone to replace the root of a previously extracted tooth.
Several companies produce various types of implants that differ in size, length and shape. It is up to the surgeon performing the procedure to determine which type of implant will be most suitable for the patient.
Made of titanium, a biocompatible metal, implants fuse with the jawbone through a physiological process called osseointegration, making them very strong. Implants can be placed in either the upper or lower jaw.
The first step in the procedure is planning, based among other things on an examination of the mouth. X-rays or scans are taken to assess the bone density and the space available for the implant. The surgeon may then determine which type of implant is suited to the patient’s oral condition and subsequently establish the treatment plan and arrange the surgery.
The second step is the surgery itself, which consists of inserting the implant. The healing period following the surgery varies from one patient to another. On average, osseointegration of the implant takes three to six months. The surgeon gives the patient instructions to be observed for enhancing and hastening the healing process.
The third and final step is the prosthetic phase, which consists of devising the restoration planned at the first step (crown, bridge or denture). This device will then be connected to the implant.
Implant treatments require teamwork between the dentist, who handles the restoration phase, and the surgeon. Good planning and communications are the key to achieving an optimal result.
